SEIS & EIS Tax Relief FAQ

What is SEIS tax relief?

The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) gives investors 50% income tax relief on investments up to £200,000 per year. If you invest £100,000 in a SEIS-qualifying company, you can claim £50,000 back on your tax bill — reducing your effective cost to £50,000.

What is EIS tax relief?

The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) gives investors 30% income tax relief on investments up to £1,000,000 per year. It also offers CGT deferral on gains reinvested into EIS companies and CGT exemption on EIS shares held for 3+ years.

What happens if I lose my investment?

Both SEIS and EIS offer loss relief. If the company fails, you can offset your loss (minus the income tax relief already claimed) against your income tax. For a higher-rate taxpayer investing £100K via SEIS, the worst case is losing about £25K after all tax reliefs — not the full £100K.

How do I find SEIS/EIS investors?

BackerIQ identifies angel investors who repeatedly back SEIS/EIS companies by analysing Companies House records. Search by sector to find investors who have experience in your industry, then use their public profiles to make warm introductions.
